From defecting from Mexican traditional ideals in Catholicism and their ties to her native land in Arizona, to her small-town adolescent years in Florida, her activism as a Dyke and Latina builds antifascist roots in the face of global repression. My name, Storm, describes strength and controlled power — something necessary and understandable, like clockwork. Chingona to me is my Nana Gloria (mi abuela) who was my matriarch and example of what it means to be a badass woman, an unstoppable force, and the epicenter of good will and love in her community and family.
Finding my place in the world is etched from the roles she and my mom played in my life. This book is the amalgamation of my identities, scars, and faith in myself — and in change itself. This is my tangible transformation as well as my landmark in time.
A prelude and a promise.
Chingona is a representation of my heart, my family, and growth that led me to where I am today. I love being Mexican, I love being Queer, and I love being my mother's daughter and my Nana's granddaughter. All the badass women in my life have made me who I am, and hold patience and live by example of who I wanna be.
I still have so much to do and more I wanna become, so I consider this book a prelude and a promise. It was a gift to be able to create and hold in my hands. I can't wait to share it with everyone. I want it to be a call to action, something you can find yourself in rather than take my words as anything more than a greeting and a starting point.
This being the first thing I own in this world, and the luck and will that got us here, I wanna donate the proceeds to help families just like mine. I love living in New York, and have the utmost respect for those fighting and resisting all forms of the fascist state. We never walk alone and hope is never lost. Our mission is to help families victimized by immigration enforcement. Hundreds of families have had their primary breadwinner detained. At Delaney Hall, we provide assistance by offering free groceries and gift cards to support families experiencing food insecurity when they visit.
ICE apprehends individuals from across the mid-Atlantic region and detains them at Delaney Hall in Newark. Families often drive for hours for the opportunity of a one-hour visit. Food4NJ.org steps in to provide assistance by packing bags of groceries and distributing grocery store gift cards to families as they leave the detention center after their visit. Additionally, other groups are present to offer refreshments, advice, and support for families in need.

Delaney Hall in Newark, NJ, is a 1,000-bed detention facility operated by The GEO Group under contract with ICE. GEO signed a 15-year agreement valued at roughly $1 billion to reopen and manage the center, which is located on Doremus Avenue and is part of ICE's network of privately run detention sites.
